Our Quinceañero

Si leeste bien, it's not a typo. Last week we celebrated my mijo who turned 15. Family and friends jokingly asked if we were going to throw him a traditional party- a quinceañera for our quiceañero. In most Latin American countries, many girls have a "coming of age" ball celebrated on their 15th birthday. It's a tradition that has metamorphosed from a simple gathering of friends and family to an over the top extravaganza.

"Sadly", the boys are left on the way-side when they turn 15 as they are not entitled to such a celebration. Having three boys and no hembras, Tony and I do not get the "opportunity" to throw a traditional birthday party. *giggles* Teee heee!! Seriously, it's more than okay for us. We have seen the stress that these exorbitant fiestas cost parents first hand from family who have girls. My mami bypassed this "opportunity" for both my sister and I because we were too damn spoiled and wanted our own individual party. {Our birthdays are 5 days apart and we are less than a year apart.} Contrary to what I believed in those years of my life, my mother just as many other parents, was and is not made of money. Ohhh, pooh! *winks*

Every year we do something big and special for our boys to celebrate their birthdays. We have done the big birthday parties complete with a jumper and piñata, we have done the amusement park thing, and traveled in the past. This year however, we were crunched by Uncle Sam which put a damper on most things we have come to enjoy in the past. Tony and I have done something right in parenting because Joshua was very understanding when he learned we could not afford to throw him the dinner party he wanted with his friends. Instead we took him out to his choice of restaurant- Chili's with just his siblings and us.

Our quinceañero, Joshua. Happy birthday baby!!
