Boys & Dishes

For many years I have been whining and complaining about the amount of dishes my guys use up in a day. Listening very patiently to all those people who advised me to let my boys wash their own dishes and better yet just let them do it for me altogether, I finally caved in. Before I go on...you must know, I have no dishwasher nor the space for one...I am the dishwasher. Yes..yesss. The cavewoman that I am I refuse to have certain amenities. No microwave too. Ha! I challenge any mom to do without those two modern time savers! Back to my boys and those darn dishes... After returning to school two years ago and working last year for a few months I could no longer keep my guys away from my territory.

Heeeelllp! Many months went by with shouts and shoves by the sink. Now my boys were whining and complaining. Uhggg. Numerous dishes went MIA and those that made it through the warpath had evidence of it's last servitude. Funny, the trash can had an odd jingle to it as hubby would roll it out every week to it's pick-up point for the garbageman.

Yesterday I witnessed a miracle or perhaps it was a growth in my family garden. After feasting on a great meal, prepared to welcome home hubby and my two youngest from summer camp, a huge pile of dishes were scattered throughout the kitchen waiting to be dealt with. No longer in school nor at work, I decided it would be nice to allow my boys to give me a helping hand. At first I heard the familiar grunts and saw the familiar long pleading faces. Aaagggg. Giving them no alternatives they slothed straight to the sink. A half hour past and not much was accomplished, felt frustrated. Then a miracle...my boys found a way to work together without my intervention.

No they did not finish the work properly, or at all, but they learned to work together. This is promising. After all, they are too old not to help and I need to let go and allow them that opportunity. No wife of theirs can ever tell me I did too much for them. ; ) Okay..okay..okay. Maybe I am a little overindulgent.

Great post! My sister was talking to my Aunt about how the boys in the family don't know how to do anything! I had to interupt and say "nay, nay"!!! Jeremiah had learned to do a lot of chores through Boy Scouts. To actually make him do it, is the problem!
