Chinese Year New Year in Los Angeles

California is home to a diverse set of folks that come from various cultural backgrounds. Even more so, Los Angeles, California is home to a greater eclectic group of people. February marks a busy month capped with numerous celebrations: Valentines Day, Mardi Gras, Lent, Presidents' Day, and Chinese Lunar New Year. It is also known as the African-American Heritage Month or Black History Month. {I'm sure I have forgotten something...oh yes, my birthday!}

This year and month also marked the first time my baby Joshua marched in a parade. Joshua's school marching band was invited to participate in the Chinatown-Los Angeles Chinese New Year Parade. For many years, I had wanted to see the parade but could never find the time to do it. This year was no exception but since my Joshua was going to be a part of it I made sure to squeeze in the time. After my knitting class in Santa Monica, I made a mad dash to Chinatown. Once I parked and found a spot in the sea of people, I poised myself with camera in hand ready to snap pictures at my son. Ayi estava esperando lo, right at the bottom of the hill on Hill Street and Ord.

Me gusto mucho el desfile. I saw one dragon after another.

While I was waiting for my son's band to come down the hill, to my horror, I noticed that the parade route wrapped around to Broadway two blocks down across from me. Ay NO!! I missed him!! I ran across to the greater mob of gente on Broadway only to see the same set of participants I had previously seen earlier on Hill. Getting some much needed exercise in, I ran back to where I was originally and continued to watch the parade.

That is when I saw a gaggle of girls dancing Folklorico in the parade!!! Of course it wouldn't be Los Angeles without the chicas dancing in their pretty dresses!!

Bailen mijas!!
